What is your favorite part about the sailing season? Just being out in the sun and wind – the elements, the people, and the food. It’s a pleasant way to spend the afternoon

What is your favorite food? Pasta

What is your favorite color? It changes…right now? It’s blue

Your favorite smell? Dinner!!!

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Scotland – to research my family history

Tell us something random about you? My dream car is a 1965 Cobra 289, white with red interior

What is your favorite part about the sailing season? The rhythm that surrounds us; the seasons, tides, the day – the rhythm of it all. There’s an ebb and flow that’s really soothing and natural. And my stove!

What’s your sign? Gemini

What is your favorite food? Are you KIDDING me?!?!?!?!

What is your favorite color? Today? The shade of blue/gray/green that her Araucana chickens are laying.

Your favorite smell? The smell of when I’ve just taken bread out of the stove and I’m standing on deck and the smell of the wood smoke, freshly baked bread and sea are all combined.

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Everywhere. (I asked her to be more specific – her reply then was anywhere I can eat!)

Tell us something random about you? Until the 10^th grade I was very shy.

2010 Windjammer Crew – Chloe & Ella

While they are not full time crew members, part of what makes the experience on the J&E Riggin so special is that the whole family sails. If you have a question – Chloe and Ella are sure to have the answer. Can you imagine having a 120 foot wooden schooner as your summer playground?! It’s soooo much better than a tree house – don’ you think?

What is your favorite food? Every kind of pasta and every kind of cheese

What is your favorite color? Blue/green/turquoise

Your favorite smell? Fresh hay and horses, fresh spring air

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Scotland, because it green, and there are lots of steeple chasers and hunter jumper horses

Tell us something random about you? I have an Austrian bloodline

Did you know that of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. Rhubard is one of them.

2010 Windjammer Crew – Toni

And we have Toni Ridout also from Dallas, Texas who is joining us for her 3rd season on the J&E Riggin. Annie is very happy to have her helpful hands in the galley!

What did you do over the winter? I did some traveling- I went to Florida, Colorado, Oklahoma, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. I got my STCW certification (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) so that I could work on yachts – trained in firefighting and sea rescues.

Why did you decide to come back for another season? It started with phone call to Annie. I went to Florida to get a job on a yacht that would allow me to pay back all my student loans. After my third week there, having done interviews and even a job offer I realized when they asked me “Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Do you see working on a yacht as a career?” that no – I didn’t see myself here. I knew I wanted to be where I was happy working so I called Annie. I bought my plane ticket that night.

Best part about the outfitting part of the season and the sailing? I love hanging out together and getting to know the other crew members. They are delightful this year- I can’t wait! The communal existence we all have is great. I’ve met crew from the Chimes, French, Evans, Bowditch and the Taber – everyone is really nice. Now that I’m a veteran crew member I can make the new crew feel welcome to the area. And while we sail? I love being in the “weeds” – when things get crazy on the boat. Like when we realize we need dessert for 30 people in 30 minutes; all the excitement and keeping it together.

Your sign? Cancer

Food? Really?!?! Munster cheese, brie, oh and Annie’s Roasted Red Wine Potatoes- I could eat those all day!

Color? It’s a tie. I love Cobalt blue, turquoise, and copper

Smell? Ohhhhh, the smell of a book. You know when you go to a used book store and you open a book – that musty paper smell.

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Only one place? Venice. I spent three favorite days of my life in Venice. It’s strikingly beautiful. And how cool is it that you get around by boat?!

Tell us something random about you. If I had my choice I’d never wear closed toed shoes – always sandals- which is weird because I love socks and how cozy they feel. And I have a Butter Bell obsession.

2010 Windjammer Crew – Scott

Next we’d like to introduce (or reintroduce if you sailed with us last year) you to Scott Pavageaux from Dallas, Texas.

What did you do over the winter? I spent last winter cooking in a restaurant and working on metal sculptures. I made my way back to Maine with a road trip stopping in to visit with my music mentor. I tried to visit different and unusual places like the Country Doctor Museum in North Carolina and the Mt. Olivet Cemetery where circus performers are buried. Then I stopped in New York to visit with Andy (former Mate on the Riggin).

Why did you decide to come back for another season? I had already decided before the end of last season that I wanted to come this year. The people I’ve met and the quality of life entailed here. There’s an attachment that developed last year – a spark.

Best part about the outfitting part of the season and the sailing? Hmmm, I like seeing the boat torn apart and then put back together again – the sanding and painting – seeing her with bright paint and getting the sails on. I love hearing the stories when we are sailing. It’s what boat people do when they get together; they talk about boats and tell boat stories.

Your sign? Virgo

Food? Gumbo

Color? Is shiny a color? Metallic colors

Smell? Leather

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Africa – they have a great musical culture.

2010 Windjammer Crew – Bo

The 2010 sailing season starts in 10 days and we thought this would be a great time to give you a small introduction to your crew. We did a little Q& A with our crew so that you can get to know them before you sail. First up…. Bo Willoughby.

Where are you from? Winslow, Maine

Why did you want to work on a windjammer? I’ve always been interested in the ocean and have not had the chance to learn about it yet. I want to get my Sea Kayak Guide license and thought since I’ve never sailed this would be a good opportunity. A friend who worked on another boat told me about you. It’s great to take the opportunity to lean about these boats while they are still here.

What is the best part about being here so far? The crew is awesome. Captain Jon is great. I’ve learned a lot so far. Sometimes when you get someplace new, you have to get a feel for who you are working with – I haven’t had that feeling with anyone here. Oh, and the Sushi here is phenomenal!

What’s your sign? I don’t know. (We looked it up for him – Bo is an Aries)

Favorite food? Spicy (He used to work at a Chinese restaurant and worked his heat index up to a 10!) I also like Atlantic salmon & Cajun food

Favorite color? A certain shade of green – kind of a hazel green and forest green.

Favorite smell? Fresh coconut

If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? I would love to canoe the entire Colorado River.

Tell us something random about you. I am one of the youngest Maine guides in the state. Oh, and I once hitch hiked the Canadian Rockies.

Who’s out of the water? This girl!

After a few days of “Are we hauling out today?” we finally made the move last night. It was a race against light (6:30pm is not a great time to start) and nasty weather on its way to us. It was a bit rocky as the wind made it less than perfect for getting the Riggin into the cradle, but we did, and are now at North End Shipyard. This morning we had our Coast Guard inspection and this afternoon we’ll start with the power wash to get all the grime of the bottom and prepare her for a paint job tomorrow when it’s not raining. We’ll be up for a few days and then splash early next week. We’ve been incredibly lucky to have had such a nice spring, makes hauling out this early not terrible.

The Winter Cover is Off!

After the rain last week we have been rewarded with beautiful weather! Temperatures in the in the 70′s, the sun shining, white fluffy clouds and we’ve already broken out the sunscreen – possibly a new record for us on how early!

The top side has been sanded and taking full advantage of the dry and warmer weather, painted too. This morning the crew was working on taking the cover off. In just couple of day we’ll be headed up on the railway for our haul out and we can get the bottom cleaned, painted and be inspected by the US Coast Guard.

Rain means working in the barn

When it rains, it pours as the saying goes- actually records all over New England are being broken including the Portland Maine rainfall record from 1953 which was broken Tuesday night. And here in Rockland the weather has been no different wet, wet, windy and wet - this means it’s time to work in the barn.

How oakum comes to us – even though the catalog says its spun already until we roll it, it’s not ready to use.

Now that all three crew members, Toni, Scott and Bo, are here rolling oakum took a third of the time this year!

Captain Jon’s to-do list in the shop.

Toni sands the captains wheel so a fresh coat of varnish can go on.
