What do these three things have in common? Well, this past July the Food Network brought Chef Bobby Flay to town to challenge Rockland resident and restaurant owner Lynn Archer of the Brass Compass to make a lobster club sandwich. Now the Brass Compass and its “wicked good” Lobster Club Sandwich has already received kudos from the New York Times so Chef Flay had his work cut out for him.

Annie has been asked quite often if Chef Flay was as friendly in person as he appears on television. The answer she says is “Anyone can lose in public consistently and still have a successful television show gets my vote.”

As you can see from these photos everyone had a fun time. This last photo was one we recently used in the J&E Riggin’s e-newsletter Windjammer News. As Annie and I were trying to decide on which photo to use we decided that even with Annie’s tongue showing this was the best one. With a good sense of humor Annie came up with a few captions for it. Here’s what we thought of:
“Great photo Annie – how about keeping your tongue in your mouth”
“At least everyone was having a good time!”
“Did Annie just tell a joke? Why is everyone laughing?”
“At least Sam (Hayward) looks good.”

Of course if you saw the episode on the Food Network you already know that our local won the challenge. Here Chef Annie and Chef Sam are getting ready to make the announcement of who won.

In case you wanted it – here is the recipe for Chef Bobby Flay’s Lobster Club with Saffron Mayonnaise, Crispy Serrano Ham and Watercress on Chipotle Brioche, just in case you want to give it a whirl. We recommend stopping by the Brass Compass the next time you are here in Rockland and getting the King of Clubs – Lobster Club Sandwich.

The television program that featured lobster was very enjoyable. I thought Annie should have received more acclaim. She is such a good cook and truly nice person. The show made me very hungry! Best wishes from a former sailing friend. Lois Mauro
