Every spring the Schooner J&E Riggin hosts an annual Work & Learn Week. This will be our 5th year and we couldn’t be more excited. This year the Association for Maritime Preservation (website coming very soon) will be sponsoring the event and providing the “learning” part of the experience! Last year over 240 hrs were donated by volunteers who helped with sanding, painting, carpentry, epoxy work, and anything else the Riggin needed an extra hand with.
The educational piece will include teaching and passing along the skills and knowledge of preserving historic wooden vessels. It will include: the use of oakum – spinning, caulking, and the use of; sanding and painting; metal work; small boat repair – yawl boat and peapod; and the servicing of blocks.
Be a part of the behind the scenes work that happens on the Riggin to prepare her for the sailing season and join us Monday, April 27th – Sunday, May 3rd. There will be two 4 hour shifts; 8am – 12pm and 1pm – 5pm. Lunch is provided for both shifts and will be prepared by Chef Annie Mahle. You can sign up for one or as many shifts as you’d like. Call the J&E Riggin office to schedule your shift at 800.869.0604.
